The Interview: Jason Wu

Summary:
     "I always strive to create clothes that are more than just trends." We can see clearly from this sentence that this is what made Jason Wu different from others, he creates something beyond his reach and made it possible.

Reflection:

     Shot to fame when Michelle Obama wore his gown to the inauguration ball. He then became a part of America's history no longer just any other fashion designer. I appreciated his hard work all along the way, especially since many people thought of him as a queer due to his characteristics. His mother who pushed him and supported him from the very beginning was his mentoring teacher. He taught us all a lesson to be yourself and strive for what you really want.

Anna Sui 蕭志美

Summary:

     Mixing vintage styles with current obsession styles is how Sui does her job. She designs clothes for people who could either go to a rock concert and hold every body's attention or go to a museum with the most suitable clothing.

Reflection:

     A whole different style from last week--Vera Wang, Sui shows a strong sense of rock 'n roll style. Presenting her true self is the lesson we should all learn from her, don't be afraid of who you are!

Summary:

1. Born in New York City of Chinese descent in 1949.
2. Became an editor at VOGUE and stayed for 17 years.
3. Previously dreamt of becoming a figure skating medalist but failed.
4. Left VOGUE at 1987, realizing that she wasn't becoming any younger then joined Ralph Lauren.
5. At the age of 40, she started designing bridal wear.

Reflection:

     Vera Wang's bridal gowns show her own character: wild with a touch of elegance. Her upper body uses mostly the bodice, while the other half expresses all the emotions. Although strapless is a big design in her artworks, I personally like the mermaid gowns better, it shows off your body shape, also it is more acceptable than the wilder ones!

    His persistence in hand-making shoes shows his playful spirit and an empowered sense of glamor.

Reflection:
    Inheriting the shoe business in his family, Choo clearly had a voice of his own. He had a way of making shoes for his patronages. First, his clients had to make an appointment with him, and discuss what kind of fabric or look he or she wants by making requests. Secondly, Choo would make a sketch of the shoe they discussed. Finally going to the fitting stage, customers can try on their shoes and see if it turned out the way they wanted. To me, this is the highest level of fashion, not only can a designer design what he wanted, but also meeting customers' needs. This is definitely one big challenge that only a few could do.

Issey Miyake 

Summary:
    Born in Hiroshima, Japan, the designer created sculptural clothing that was either ready-to-wear or for couture.

Reflection:
    Despite going through hard times in his childhood, Miyake still turned out to be successful in his work.He wanted people to wear clothing that was comfortable enough, he then used "pleats" so that it has a flexible function for busy lifestyles. To proof that his clothes were such comfort, Steve Jobs was the perfect one. Jobs' everyday black turtleneck was also a design by Miyake!

Summary:
     This video talks about the top tens reasons that led to Lauren's success.

Reflection:
     Every designer has it's will and belief in order to create such a brand that passes throughout the time. And the signature cotton mesh Polo shirt will be something that lives over the century. I truly look up to Lauren's spirit towards fashion and his own life. All in all, trust your own senses!

Summary:
    In Mr.Yeh's speech, it gives a brief introduction to the history of clothes from the West in the twentieth century.

Reflection:
   I was very attentive when listening to the speech, you could know that Prof. Yeh is surely someone who knows a lot about fashion. The history is very interesting to know, since I never had a proper chance to know it.

Salvatore Ferragamo

Summary: 

     How did "the shoemaker for the stars" --Ferragamo started to make shoes for the Hollywood stars.

Reflection:

     The roaring 20s, the era that many designers and the sense of fashion popped out because they have what they wanted to change especially in mind. Not only did the ones that truly became famous put their ideas into action, but also affected the society of their time. 

     Salvatore Ferragamo started from creating wearable works of art for Hollywood superstars. At that time, people only wore black or brown for their shoes, however, Ferragamo didn't think that should be the case. He designed shoes that were colorful, representing novelty. Nonetheless, the lacks of resources during the first world war made him use humble materials for the soles of the shoes. But nobody knew that this would be the symbol of this shoe brand.

     All in all, his spirit of never giving up is one that we should all learn.

Summary:
     The history of how Gucci was established. The other video was being ironic about the famous brand due to its many advertisements, or marketing strategies.

Reflection:
     In my opinion, the pattern of Gucci is very similar to Louis Vuitton, tho logo may be different, however, the whole style doesn't make much difference.
     However, Gucci is currently making changes in the design: collaboration with the American street artist Trouble Andrew shows a whole different version of the fashion brand.

Reflection:
     Chanel has and will be the classic of the classic in the fashion industry. Its items, although expensive, will surely go on through decades and decades.

Summary: Established in 1854, Louis Vuitton opened the first leather shop. His inspiration on Japanese flowers was made the symbolic pattern of the brand. In 1983, the first Louis Vuitton store was opened in Taipei.

2. Aluminum: a silvery-white metallic item.
3. Counterfeit: pretended, unreal.

Reflection:
     Although this brand has been known around the world for over hundreds of years, I learned today that there are Neverfull bag, the Alma bag which goes in many colors and sizes. However, I'm not fond of this brand because the pattern of the brand doesn't appeal to me.

Behind the scenes: The Tale of Thomas Burberry

Summary:
     Thomas Burberry previously found a fabric: gabardine, which could be convenient if worn by soldiers or other military uses. He then designed the trademark of the brand: trench coat. However, Burberry's popularity wouldn't be known worldwide if not for his equestrian knight logo founded in 1909. All in all, Thomas Burberry had surely made an impact on the  fashion industry.

Vocabulary:

1. Gabardine: a tough, tightly woven fabric, which is almost waterproofed that can make windbreakers, trousers, suits or other uniforms.
2. Monogram: a symbol, usually formed from the first letters of a person's name joined together.(Initial)
3. Inclement: a weather especially unpleasant with cold wind and rain.

Reflection:

The worldwide known brand has been established from nothing to the trademark that wouldn't be ignored. I have noticed that every designer design things to make our living world a better space. Owing to these people, we now have a more distinguished sense of fashion.

Reflection: I can imagine how it is for people to want to tell the world how they think by showing it through their clothing. It no only reflects the way people think, but also the culture they had in their current society.
